Sporting News

While watching the University of Utah give away another football game on TV the other evening, I began to ponder on athletic events in general and what I like and dislike in the field of athletic events. I use the word events as a broad generalization of what many consider athletic contests although I have trouble actually thinking some events that are considered as athletics really qualify as such.

First let me state that any event listed as a game might be of interest to me. Events that are billed as meets or competitions or matches hold very little interest for me. Let me explain.

Athletic events where you use an object that needs to be thrust at a goal at speeds that endanger the participants health and well being, qualify in my book as games. These events usually require the participants to wear some amount of protective apparel. This could be as basic as a cheap athletic supporter or sports bra, all the way to a player dressed from head to toe in a complete covering of padding, plastic and steel, such as a hockey goalie. Events where you are obliged to show about 90% bare skin do not usually qualify as games. I.e. Lady gymnastics, swimming and cheer leading come to mind. I do not doubt the athleticism of the participants of these events, but I do not consider them to be athletic games in the truest sense of the word. The final determination of the winner should be made by the participants themselves, not by someone sitting on the sideline holding up a card that says 9.125 or by someone who has schmoozed the right people at the right time to be appointed a judge even if they have no qualifications for the task. Some of the sports I have no use for. Equestrian, or as it is called on Upper Crust Road, Dressage. As much as I dislike some sports, IE. NBA Basketball, it is still preferable to watching someone dressed in a fruity looking red coat, white pants and hat that makes you look like you work at Hot Dog on a Stick, and taking a horse that should have been trained as a bucking bronc and having it jump over fake ponds and hedges. Most people watch equestrian meets only to see the rider fall off the horse or get thrown into the prickly hedge. People go to equestrian events to be seen, as it is perceived by many to be a rather elite crowd that attends. It is kind of like going to the Opera. You want to be seen there even if you hate the music. You don't have to let anyone know that on the way home you will be listening to Tupak Shakur, Ozzy Osbourne or Buck Owens. The only good thing about watching equestrian is the rider is usually fully clothed. I would be more likely to watch meets and competitions if there were some final event after the final judges scores were posted where all the participants could have it out in some final and defining competition that could be judged more fairly by who was still breathing, standing or living at the conclusion. A big fight at the end of a gymnastics meet and I would be inclined not only to watch on tv, but perhaps even attend in person. Dare imagine a three way lady gymnastic meet between the Lady Utah Red Rocks, The LSU Lady Bayou Bottom-Feeders and The Lady Alabama Crimson Tide Crawdadettes that ends in a mega-cat fight. The school with the last participant standing would get the Title of "Meet Champion." As an added plus for a man, you would not be as afraid of someone knowing you were in attendance.

Other athletic events that I have little use for..

Tennis Match....A racist elitist sport from the outset. Love-40, Deuce, Advantage Mr. Picklesworth. Scoring was devised in tennis to dissuade minorities and people from lower socio-economic background from engaging in the sport. I relate more to scores like 5-2 Boston over the Yankees...1-Nil, Manchester United over Tottenham, 21-20 BYU over DeVry Tech, 125-61 anybody over the LA Clippers.

Cheer leading Competition...I do not understand why I am compelled to be verbally assaulted by a cheerleader at an athletic event. I am not a very bright person but I am reasonably sure that I know when to cheer during a contest. Cheer Leaders are a distraction to the fans. If you are at a game and happen to be in the first few rows, they will inevitably stand up in front of you during a crucial moment, en masse, and start that catchy refrain "We've got spirit, yes we do. We've got spirit how 'bout you?" And to think of the families of the folks that are doing this have paid hundreds, if not thousand of dollars to learn theses catchy ditties. There are families who have second mortgaged the house to send the child off to cheer leading camp several time for many years so they could perfect their skill. They have been in numerous competitions across the US so they could bring home that 14' Trophy signifying they are the best in the world at what they do. Meanwhile, at several dozen other Competitions, held the same day, several dozen other school are being awarded the same honor. In the meantime ,school districts strapped for cash because of programs like this, are cutting spending for music, art, and other valuable programs that actually teach life skills. Perhaps the school districts could re-introduce sewing classes and have the participants make their own uniforms to help cut costs and actually learn how to do something.

Golf Match..As a friend of mine, John Levanger stated, "A waste of good Pasture." Again, a sport still alive with racism and snootiness.

Wrestling(not rasslin)....Although very athletic and somewhat interesting, I do not fancy a sport where you face might be pressed into someone's nether regions for extended periods of time. I tried it in high school, and spent most of the time looking at the ceiling. It was not for me.

NASCAR Event..Three hours of left turns and moving your foot back and forth between the accelerator and brake does not an qualify as an athletic event. Genetic researchers should frequent these events to determine what happens when too many people with unrecognizable genetics procreate with a close relative. I have never been a fan of the smell of gasoline or burned flesh.

Figure Skating Meet...Too much exposed flesh on the female participants. Most men who watch figure skating are hoping for an equipment malfunction for the female participants. Too much ski-tight apparel for the male contestants. The male costumes are only slightly less revealing than the male anatomical design featured in an 11th grade high school health book or in an alternate lifestyle magazine featuring male models. Too may women spectators are waiting for that same equipment malfunction, only for the male participants. The only figure skating event I ever
enjoyed occurred several years ago when Tonya Harding tried to have Nancy Kerrigan's legs broken before the Olympics started. TV Ratings scored an all-time high for that event.
Swimming Meets...again, too much exposed skin. No hitting each other to gain an advantage, no ball, stick, puck or other such projectile. Also, I do not like it when the male participants are required to shave their chests and the female participants from the former Soviet Union have to shave their faces. Water Polo is one water sport that is somewhat acceptable. You do not get too see all of the action, however, as there is considerable action out of view, underwater such as kneeing, gouging, punching and more. It is still preferable, however, to watching synchronized swimming.
That is all for now. I have to leave for the Roller Derby. I'm not sure if it qualifies as a game, meet, or competition but I hope there is very little exposed skin and significant amounts of blood.

Randomness

I am officially between lawn mowing and snow blowing seasons, and that coupled with only 11 church meeting this week instead of the usual 12, I realized I might have time to update my long neglected blog.
The above picture was taken Sunday last as the kids all showed up after church with their kiddies to eat and to get a new grand kiddie picture with Rhonda and I. Since Titan and Charlie came into the family last summer, we have not taken a new picture with all involved. When looking at all the pictures, this one reminded me of my grand children's parent's behavior, especially when at church. It is fortunate we did not get excommunicated because of their behavior. The only ward members who sat by us in Sacrament Meeting on a regular basis were hearing impaired. Others would sit by us for one week and the next week they would be seated on the opposite side of the chapel.

It is now just over three years since I had my Gastric Bypass surgery. It is still the best thing I ever did. I still have some issues with eating. I still crave certain things. I still throw up if I eat the wrong things, eat too fast, don't chew enough or see a picture of Barbra Streisand. I have to very careful with refined carbs.. Pasta will make my stomach dump sugar and then I get dizzy and light headed to the point of passing out. About a year ago, Rhonda had to summon the para medics to my side because of this problem. I was out of it. They gave me a $176.00 bottle of glucose water intravenously and it solved the problem. Rhonda did not really need to call the medics, but as we had to call them to take care of Rhonda a few years ago when she fell and broke her ankle, she was beyond anxious to again see their rippling biceps and overpaid smiles. She told the girls it was worth it getting her ankle broken just to be in such close proximity to these government funded Fraternity Boys. I could, however, have done without them.

Recently I ventured to the South Towne Mall. It has been about two or three years since I ventured in to that mall. It seemed to be a terrible waste of time. Nothing in there that I really wanted or needed. I'm sure a lot of what the people were buying will wind up a a yard sale or the DI within the near future. I'll re-consider buying at that point. This mall is very close to Katie's house in Sandy. Midvale has no malls. They closet thing we have to a food court is 4 taco carts on the same block.
Yesterday, however, topped even that. I have not been to the Fashion Place Mall in at least five years. Because of new stores and re-invented old stores, they had a re- grand-opening. I could not resist the allure, I stopped in to see what was new. In five years a lot has changed. Lots of new store names, most of them not in English. Several snooty sounding French Names on the store fronts but with the same bored looking, dis-interested employees ignoring the customers while they are sending text messages . One new eatery that just opened is a restaurant with an Italian look to it named "Brio". I looked on-line for the meaning of the word Brio . The number one synonym listed for Brio is "Beans". As this eatery is much more upscale than say, Olive Garden, I guess I can understand why the glowing neon did not say "Beans".
There is much ballyhooed new Crate and Barrel store that just opened last Friday. I opted not to go there. I have more than an adequate supply of crates and barrels in my garage, basement and storage shed. Rhonda also has a eternity worth of these items in her bedroom and spare room.
I sauntered through the old stand-by Nordstrom trying not to stand out. I didn't want any of the "Associates" having to worry about assisting anyone dressed in vintage DI. I walked by a display of silk ties.. I picked out one with possibilities. The possibility ended when I looked at the Price-tag. $125.00. These ties were absolutely no different in quality than the ones I bought in Italy for $2.00 per tie. I guess those little bags they put them in must be very expensive. But then you get to walk around the mall for a couple of hours and hope you see someone you know so they will be impressed that you are a Nordstrom Shopper.
I was thinking of going to Sears and looking for something in the Red-neck department. But when you do find something at Sears, you can never find anyone to help you. I had been ignored enough for one day.. I exited Nordstrom and took the long way to my truck, through the parking lot, as I really didn't want to bump into anyone I know. I think it will be a least ten years before I go back.. Maybe I'll be dead by then.

This was not done with Photoshop!

I came home this morning and thought someone was tying to break into Rhonda's car. I was about to dial 911 when I realized who was on the working end of my shop vac. After I pulled my self off of the garage floor, I managed to stop shaking long enough to take some photos. Retirement has done strange things to this woman. It is almost like she is going through another kind of change without the hot flashes. The Mayan's contend that the world will end on 12/21/2012. I think they were off by about a year and a half.

Back Again!

After a lengthy hiatus from blogging, I am attempting to write again, hopefully with some regularity. My schedule for the last year has not allowed me the luxury of extra time to write. Between Church work, yard work, and working myself into the ground to please Rhonda, I have little time for anything else.
I will, however attempt to rectify this situation, if only temporarily. If Rhonda thinks I have any spare time, I am sure she will find more for me to do.
There are many things I could write about. The most important of which is a new Grandson. But I do not want to steal Annie and Dan's thunder, suffice to say it is one of the happiest events of my life. I could relate to you another job gone down the crapper, but that is pretty boring. So I decided to write concerning a long weekend trip that Rhonda and I recently took. Because it was a really long weekend, (32 days to be exact) I will not be able to chronicle the whole trip, but I decided to give you one a one day description of our trip.. The day I will share with you is about day # 20 of our excursion. For those of you who are unaware, at the end of April, Rhonda and I flew to Beijing, China. We were there for about 6 days sightseeing and such and then we embarked on a cruise ship for 23+ days and nights. We went to 3 cities in China, Busan, South Korea, Vladivostok, Russia and then across the Pacific Ocean to Alaska down the inside passage finally ending the cruise in Vancouver, B.C. I'm sorry that I can't share any pictures(I took about 1400 of them) but my computer is broken and I don't know how to load pictures on Rhonda's computer.

MAY 13, 2011
Captain's Log
1000a.m
2200 GMT
6455 Zulu

At sea between Vladivostok, Russia and Whittier, Alaska.

Seas: Moderate
5" Swells.(that is just my ankles)
Temp. 51F
Wind, blowing from somewhere.

10 a.m. I finally get up. Shower, Dress. Sleep is not easy. Between the constant time change, and constant coughing on Rhonda's part, it's tough to get enough sleep. Rhonda has a terrible cough. She will not go to the Ship's Doctor. She says she will not pay him $60.00 for him to tell her she has a bad cough. Rhonda did not go to medical school, but she knows she has a cough.

10;30a Off to breakfast. Mountains of food. I opt for English Bacon(it looks like cheap ham), prunes(looks like golf-ball size wet raisins),and scrambled eggs with salmon. Eggs are nice and runny. Salmon appear to be spawning in the eggs. Also some watermelon.. Watermelon must be cheap. It is served 24 hours per day.

11:30a.m. Off to the gym. Lots of people trying to fool themselves that 10 minutes of looking at a treadmill will burn the extra 5000 calories they sucked in yesterday.I cut a dashing figure in my mid-sixties cruise wear.(age of cruise and age of cruise clothes). Some chronologically challenged Irish tart starts to try to engage me in conversation. I can understand Korean better that I can understand Irish.I cut my workout short, excuse myself in my best Irish Brogue, and hurry back to the room to ready myself for lunch.

12 Noon. Rhonda just returned to the room having finished book # 183 of the trip. She has to make an entry in her "Books I Have Read Journal". She make copious note about all books she has read. She has enough of the aforementioned journals to fill a bookcase. When finished, she leaves to get a slice of pizza(served 12 hours a day of the Fiesta Deck) and her 24th diet coke of the day.
I eat lunch at about 2p.m. I opt for the minute steak. I think there is a dog missing in South Korea whose name is Minute. Also some grapes and watermelon.I don't chew the steak(?) enough and get some lodged where it shouldn't be lodged. Since my surgery, the opening to my stomach from my esophagus is about 1/4 the size it use to be. If I don't chew enough, the food will get lodged at checkpoint throw-up. I need to throw up.. I do not like to throw up in public venues. The room is so far away, I need a taxi to get there, I decide to try to wait it out. In about 45 minutes, Korean Fido clears checkpoint throw up. I feel better. I check the daily program for the rest of the daily activities.

3 p.m. Health lecture on the Lido Dec. "Liver Spots and How To Accessorize Them".

4 p.m. Fiesta Deck. Dr. Paine, Ship Doctor. Lecture on "Ensure or Prunes. Making the Right Choice".

4:30 p.m. Lecture on Dolphin Deck by Herman(Stubby) Limb, physical Therapist. "Walkers or Motorized Wheel Chairs. Recommended AARP Suppliers.

5 p.m. Getting ready for diner. Tonight's dress code is Smart Casual". I guess I will have to scrape the Vladivostok mud off my tennis shoes before I dine.

6 p.m. Very nice dining companions. A retired couple, John and Jane from Richland, Washington and a Mom and Dad and son from London, Ontario Ca. All very nice. John and and are on their 12th cruise.

That pales in comparison to a couple on the ship who have spent a total of 937 days on cruise ships over the last few years.

7;30 p.m. !0 minute power nap.

8:15 p.m. Movie under the stars on the pool deck. This is a great concept when in warmer waters. In the Bering Sea, however, it leaves much to be desired. I grab a bag of popcorn and move on. I position myself by the hot tub fully intending to read. Bad choice of a place to sit. An extra large Russian man is in the hot tub. No one is with him as there is no room for anyone else. He stood up to exit and there is only 7" of water left in the tub.The really bad part of him standing was viewing his swimming attire, or lack thereof. He was wearing a speedo. Once again the urge to throw up was upon me.. This time, however, it was not from chewing to little, but seeing to much. I know obese, and this man had a graduate degree. he was much bigger that I was at my heaviest (412lbs) and around a 6 inches shorter. I am considering consulting a maritime attorney to see if I can sue for damages. Aggravated optical assault on a cruise ship passenger.

10 p.m. The Japanese on board are now headed to the buffet in large numbers. Many of them have thier own soup mixes in styrofoam containers and they just add hot water and fill up their containers with tea. Then they sit for a couple of hours getting quite loud while playing majong or table tennis. The Japanese have no idea how to stand in line for anything. They constantly butt into line and invade your space. Rhonda has had it with their crowding. She now pushes them back, gives them less than Christ-like looks, and I heard her mumble to some of them as she was pushing "Remember Pearl Harbor". Rhonda needs to get home and go back to church..

11 p.m. It is time for bed. Rhonda is still coughing. I can;t sleep. I turn on the TV.
Chanenl 4 msnbc...Oh Barf
Channel 5 Fox and Friends...Oh Barf
Channel 6 Romance Channel Double Barf.
Channel 8. Australian Rules football game. It is the Alice Spring Jackalongs Vs. The Ayers Rock Kangarobies direct from Bilabong Pitch in Dongaling, New South Wales. It is not very interesting but still much better that the NBA.

I cannot find the Andy Griffith Show. I need to get to sleep. I don't want to miss breakfast in the morning.

End of Sabbatical

It is now approaching about 10 months since I have posted anything on my blog. I am considering a return to a semi-regular schedule of writing, but I am not sure. Rhonda is retiring in about 2 weeks and the main reason I haven't posted anything during the last, many months is that most of my efforts have been focused on trying to make Rhonda's life easier, less stressful and generally more meaningful. The remainder of my time has been spent harassing my Grand kids and trying to stay awake during Sacrament Meeting. Now with the prospect of having to entertain Rhonda 24/7, it remains to seen been if I will be able to post with any regularity. Stay tuned.
